MENENDEZ, HOBOKEN CELEBRATE THE FRANK SINATRA POST OFFICE
HOBOKEN, NJ -- Rep. Bob Menendez (D-NJ-13), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, today joined Hoboken Mayor David Roberts, United States Postal Service District Manager Eugene H. Rear, and Nancy Sinatra, daughter of the late Frank Sinatra, in a dedication ceremony enacting Public Law 107-263, designating the Hoboken, New Jersey, Post Office Building as the Frank Sinatra Post Office Building. Menendez was the author of the bipartisan legislation, H.R. 3034, which re-designated the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 89 River Street in Hoboken, New Jersey, as the “Frank Sinatra Post Office Building.”
“It is an honor to be here today with the family of the late, great Frank Sinatra to celebrate the re-designation of the Hoboken Post Office for one of this City’s most famous and favorite sons,” said Menendez. “Mr. Sinatra was not only one of the pre-eminent entertainers of the 20th Century, but also a great philanthropist, believed to have provided millions of dollars to countless charities worldwide. It is a fitting tribute to rename this Post Office, in the City that started it all, in his honor.”
After having received many requests from constituents, Menendez introduced H.R. 3034, the Frank Sinatra Post Office Designation Act, on October 24, 2001, to name Hoboken’s Main Post Office at 89 River Street the “Frank Sinatra Post Office Building,” in honor of the late Hoboken and New Jersey legend. This bipartisan piece of legislation had 16 co-sponsors, including the entire New Jersey delegation. It passed the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as the US Senate by Unanimous Consent. It was signed into law by the President on October 30, 2002.
“While naming a post office after New Jersey’s proudest son may seem unusual, the symbolism is unmistakable -- like Sinatra’s voice and music, the postal service brings people -- family and friends -- together,” added Menendez.
Sinatra utilized his dynamic talents and culturally acute instincts to do more than simply entertain -- he used music and theatre as mediums to carry a socially-conscience message to fans and admirers around the world. In films such as ‘The Manchurian Candidate’ and ‘Von Ryan's Express,’ Sinatra, the actor, educates us on the heroic and selfless sacrifices of America's World War II and Korean War veterans, who vigorously defended the cherished principles of freedom and democracy. During his critically acclaimed performance in ‘The House I Live In,’ Sinatra was able to make thousands of Americans understand and appreciate how ethnic and religious diversity is the foundation for cultural and societal progress.
In the middle of his career, Frank Sinatra earned the nickname ‘Chairman of the Board of Show Business’ because of his simultaneously successful careers as a musician, entertainer, and leading Hollywood actor. This Chairman of the Board also was the founder and leader of one of the most dynamic and star-studded ensembles, known as the Rat Pack. Members included Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Joey Bishop. Along with being featured performers on the Las Vegas entertainment scene, this group went on to star in four amusing and witty films -- ‘Ocean's Eleven,’ ‘Sergeants Three,’ ‘Four for Texas,’ and ‘Robin and the Seven Hoods.’
“During a show business career that spanned more than 50 years, Frank Sinatra is widely regarded to be one of the most successful entertainers of his era. His appearances and performances sparked the attention and excitement worthy of an admired, global icon. His resume of achievements and accomplishments include Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, and numerous other entertainment honors,” Menendez concluded. “Naming Hoboken's Main Post Office after the late Frank Sinatra honors and recognizes Hoboken's number one hero. Today, we bring decades of Sinatra's success back home to where it all began, in Hoboken, New Jersey.”
Ich bin schon länger an dem Thema dran, falls ich es schaffe, gibt es einen kleinen Beitrag hierzu in der nächsten "The Voice".

Thank you Frank.... Voice Of Our Time, A Voice For All Time Francis Albert Sinatra 1915-1998
HOBOKEN, N.J. -- Frank Sinatra can't have a commemorative stamp for another five years. In the meantime, hometown fans of Ole Blue Eyes can have their envelopes stamped "Frank Sinatra Station."
The main branch of the Hoboken Post Office on Friday was named for the city's most famous son during a ceremony attended by the singer's daughter, Nancy, and local, state and federal officials.
"I have to tell you, although Daddy was very respectful of the U.S. Postal Service and its workers, he wasn't one of its best customers. He was taught by a certain group never to write anything down," Nancy Sinatra said, referring to her father's purported links to organized crime.
Nancy Sinatra, whose hits songs include "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," was accompanied by her daughter, AJ Lambert, and son-in- law, Matt Azzarto, whose band, "The New Hoboken Four," plays regularly at the Hoboken club Goldhawk.
Gary S. Ferrari, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, said people must be dead at least 10 years before their image can be put on a stamp, as Elvis Presley's was in 1993, 16 years after he died.
But Sinatra, who died May 14, 1998, probably will get his picture on a stamp eventually, Ferrari said.
The bill to rename the post office was introduced in December [2001 ist gemeint, BV] by Rep. Robert Menendez, whose district includes Hoboken. The U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives approved the measure unanimously, and President Bush signed it.
Menendez, who moved to Hoboken in February, referred to the singer as "a superstar, a legend, and an icon." He also praised Sinatra as a concerned American, who used his singing and acting talents to express the country's core values.
Addressing 150 Sinatra fans under a tent near the Hoboken waterfront, Menendez read the lyrics of a song Sinatra made popular, "What is America to Me?" from the socially conscious film, "The House I Live In."
"A name, a map, a flag I see," Menendez recited. "A simple word: Democracy." _____
